In Petteril Bank Early Years Unit, we embrace the whole school philosophy of encouraging our children to be the best they can be.

The Nursery and Reception years represent the children’s first steps into formal education and as such are vitally important.

The Foundation Stage Curriculum covers six areas of learning. These six areas will be introduced through a variety of suitable play activities, linked to a topic or theme.

early yearsPersonal, social and emotional development
Your child will be encouraged to be self-confident, take an interest in things, know what their own needs are, tell the difference between right and wrong, and be able to dress and undress.

early yearsCommunication, language and literacy
Your child will be encouraged to communicate confidently and clearly, enjoying stories, songs and poems, hearing and saying sounds and linking them with the alphabet. They may begin to read and write some familiar words and learn to use a pencil.

Mathematical development
Your child will be encouraged to develop an understanding of maths through stories, songs, games and imaginative play. They will become comfortable with numbers and ideas such as ‘heavier than’ or ‘bigger than’. They will be aware of shapes and space.

Your child will be encouraged to explore and find out about the world around them, asking questions about it. They will build with different materials, know about everyday technology and learn what it is used for. They will find out about past events in their lives. They will find out about different cultures and beliefs.

Your child will be encouraged to move confidently, controlling their body and handling equipment. They will begin to develop an awareness of health which will include the importance of exercise and healthy eating.

Your child will be encouraged to explore colours and shapes, try dance, making things, telling stories and making music.
